There aren’t a lot of women writers, there aren’t a lot of women producers, there aren’t a lot of women in comedy, and there aren’t a lot of women directors.
Oops, I’m all four of those things.
Being a woman in Hollywood can be really depressing. The WGA released it’s annual diversity report and found that from 1999 to 2011, women have increased in positions by only 5% from 25% to 30%.
Here’s from their overview:
Findings from the 2013 WGAW TV Staffing Brief show that - despite a few pockets of promise - much more work must be done on the television diversity front before the corps of writers telling our stories looks significantly more like us as a nation. Recently, women writers have made small gains in overall staff employment and in executive producer positions but remain significantly underrepresented among writers staffing television shows.
(This quote I found from the Women in Hollywood blog)
Being a female director is pretty rare too. We all know that only one woman has been awarded the Oscar for Best Director. Zero were nominated this year and most years. When you get into women directing comedy, it gets worst. None of the top grossing comedies of 2012 were directed by women.
In this article posted on MovieReviews.com, they salute 15 female comedy directors working today - http://enterprise1.drupalgardens.com/features/310661/celebrating-great-women-comedy-directors
While all of these movies are funny, beautifully directed, none of them are what I would call hard comedy. I’m talking Will Ferrell type comedy. That’s what I’m directing, that’s what I co-wrote, that’s what we are making.
I’m excited because I feel like I’m breaking ground in comedy. I’m excited to join the ranks of female directors. I’m excited to make people laugh and create some hilarious jokes and gags. I’m excited to yell cut and that’s a wrap.
I’m excited but also depressed. There’s a part of me that wishes this wasn’t new, groundbreaking or news-worthy. I’m tired of seeing “Are Women Funny?” articles, I’m tired of seeing movies where the women are the straight man, I’m tired of the bechdel test.
Just let me make a movie already!
